Description
Ladykirk House is a 2-storey sandstone house dating from 1903, built in a Scots Renaissance style and arranged around a U-shaped plan.
The front facade is asymmetrical, with a projecting, gabled wing on the left. This wing features a rectangular bay at ground level with a tripartite window, cornice, and blocking course. Above are two windows within a single pedimented architrave. The wing includes Flemish crowsteps, token castellated details, and corbelled bartizans at the base of the skews, culminating in a railed platform topped with a flagpole. The central section has a projecting, single-storey porch with a tripartite window facing forward, a door to the right, and access via a balustraded staircase. The wallhead is castellated, with corner bartizans and a central, decorative feature resembling a pediment. The first floor features a pair of windows. To the right is a slightly advanced gabled bay mirroring the left wing, with a tripartite window on the ground floor and a bipartite window above, both within pedimented architraves. The final bay of the main block has a bipartite window on the ground floor and a single window above. A single-storey wing extends to the right, with a central crowstepped bay containing a tripartite window, flanked by single bays.
The garden front, to the left of the entrance front, features a bay with single windows on both floors, followed by a gabled, slightly advanced bay with bipartite windows on both floors, both within pedimented architraves. A three-bay section then continues, with a projecting rectangular bay at ground level on the left and a French window on the right, leading to a balustraded terrace. The first floor has bipartite windows to the left and centre, with a single window above the French window. The facade is finished with an advanced gabled bay containing a tripartite window on the ground floor, a bipartite window above, both within pedimented architraves, and gable-head chimney stacks. A battered base course runs along the front. The roof is slate, with terracotta ridge tiles.
The interior retains many original features, including a panelled hall with a balustraded staircase leading to the first floor. The hall features Corinthian pillars and pilasters of varnished timber at ground level, and white-painted columns on the first floor. The Billiard Room has wood panelling, some panels carved with decorative drops, an elaborate plaster ceiling, a marble fireplace with a wooden overmantle.
