Description
Auchans House is the ruin of a mansion built by Sir William Cochrane, later Earl of Dundonald. It has an L-shaped plan, with a square tower containing a staircase located in the re-entering angle. A western wing has been lengthened, but the entire building appears to date from the same period, marked with the date 1644. The entrance doorway is a good example of the Renaissance architectural style then fashionable. The ruin is referenced in The County and City of Edinburgh Directory, Volume II, pages 174-179, including plans and illustrations.
