Description

The property comprises a farmhouse, stables, walled garden, gardener’s cottage, and associated agricultural buildings, predominantly of the late 18th century with later additions. The overall layout is characterized by a symmetrical, U-shaped stable block with a subsequent infill to form a quadrangular courtyard, 19th-century implement sheds, and an extensive 18th-century walled garden to the northwest, along with a later 19th-century gardener’s cottage. Adjacent to this is a mid-19th-century farmhouse with a 19th-century dairy and byre attached. The buildings are constructed of coursed whinstone with droved sandstone margins. The former stables are in poor condition as of 2003.

The stables feature a central, round-arched pend to the southwest with a crowstepped gable above. A gable doocot is incorporated, featuring a Venetian window, blind side lights, and approximately 120 pigeon ports. A stone above the doocot window is inscribed 'JF 1843?'. Flanking wings have two windows to the ground floor, with smaller blind openings containing slit vents above; one wing lacks a pitched roof. A later single-storey bothy range is located to the rear, including a square brick clock tower that was previously harled. Segmental and flat-arched openings are found throughout the ranges, along with oculi. A forestair provides access to grooms’ accommodation, and catslide detail is present at doorways within the courtyard. A former tack room is situated below. Granaries and haylofts occupy the upper floors. A later long range to the right features a large opening with a relieving arch to the left, paired segmental-arched openings to the right, with a further flat-arched opening to the outer right. Two smaller windows are positioned above, and small circular vents are located below a moulded eaves cornice. The inner courtyard is paved with setts and bricks. Grey slates cover the piended roofs, although some areas have been replaced with corrugated iron; brick stacks are also present.

The farmhouse, likely dating to around 1843, is a three-bay, two-storey, piend-roofed house with raised window and angle margins. UPVC windows now replace the original timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing. The interior was not inspected in 2003. A former dairy is located to the left, and a byre adjoins at a right angle. The construction is of whinstone with ashlar margins.

The walled garden is rectangular, measuring approximately 120 meters by 70 meters, and adjoins the stables with tall, coped sandstone rubble walls. The northeast end is shaped and stepped. Some sections of the garden are ruinous.

The gardener’s cottage is a three-bay, two-storey structure with segmental-headed windows. It features a porch with flanking windows, and first-floor windows that break through overhanging, bracketed eaves. The walls are of whinstone with sandstone margins. Timber sash and case windows with 12-pane glazing (good later 20th-century replacements) are present. The roof is slate, with end stacks, and cast iron rainwater goods are fitted.
