Description

Valsgarth is a 19th-century croft located in Papil, Unst. It consists of a single-storey and attic, three-bay house featuring a gabled glazed timber porch at the center of the south elevation, along with a long single range of gabled outbuildings extending east from the east gable. The house has harled walls, while the outbuildings are constructed from random rubble.

The house is symmetrical, with the porch in the central bay. The porch has a cement-rendered base and timber mullioned and transomed glazing on the front and sides. There is a timber entrance door on the west side, which has a panelled lower section and a glazed upper section. The house also features decorative timber bargeboards and a timber finial on the tarred pitched roof. The flanking bays contain low, nine-pane, hoppered timber windows. There is a small square attic window on the left side of the west gable and a small lean-to addition at the rear.

The roof is made of purple-grey slate and includes cast-iron gutters and downpipes, a cement-rendered ridge, and wide skew copes. The gablehead stacks are harled with stone copes and circular cans.

The outbuildings have blank rubble walls and a vertically-boarded timber door located to the outer right of the south elevation. There is a lower gabled barn at the east gable, which is roofless as of 1997, and it has a vertically-boarded timber door on the left side of the south elevation. The outbuildings feature a shallow-pitched tarred roof with skylights and felted concrete skew-copes.
