Description

Banks in Norwick, Unst, is a later 19th-century crofting group located on a beach-front site. It consists of a two-storey, three-bay house flanked by single-storey wings, with a single-storey, three-bay cottage to the south and a single-storey, three-bay outbuilding to the north. The walls are made of whitewashed rubble.

The house has a near-symmetrical design with the entrance door slightly offset to the left of center. It features regular windows on both the ground and first floors in the flanking bays. The single-storey wings include a door and window in the shallow-roofed wing to the left (south) and a window in the lean-to wing on the right.

The cottage is symmetrical, with a central door and windows in the flanking bays. The north gable of the cottage shares a wall with the south wing of the house.

The outbuilding also has a near-symmetrical appearance, with a door at the center and irregularly-sized windows in the flanking bays.

All buildings have modern glazing. The roofs are covered with tarred felt, featuring a pitched design with a platform ridge for the house, pitched roofs for the south wing and cottage, and a mono-pitch for the north wing and outbuilding. The house and the south gable of the cottage have whitewashed rubble gablehead stacks, and there are substantial rubble skew-copes.

There is a ruin with a symmetrical principal elevation facing east, which includes a central door flanked by low windows. This structure is roofless and has low gableheads.

The boundary and sea walls consist of a drystone wall to the east, which aligns with the buildings and encloses the foreground, and a battered sea wall immediately to the east, sloping down to the beach.
