Description
Dunrossness Parish Church, dated 1790, is a symmetrical hall church with a rectangular plan, featuring six by two bays and porches that project from the east and west gables. The walls are harled with painted dressings and details.
On the south elevation, there are tall round-arched windows with high cills and keystones in the bays flanking the center, while the windows in the outer bays have low cills. The east gable has a projecting gabled single-storey porch at the center, with a vertically-boarded timber entrance door on the north elevation and pointed-arched windows on the south and east elevations. The corners are clasped by buttresses, and there are windows flanking the center in the principal gablehead. At the apex, there is a droved ashlar belfry featuring a square plinth with three-centred arches that are blind to the north and south, topped with a stepped stone cap and a ball finial.
The north elevation includes a gabled wing that projects at the center, with a modern lean-to addition in the re-entrant on the right side, and there are windows in two bays to the left. The west gable features a projecting single-storey vestry at the center, with pointed-arched windows on the south and west elevations, and a vertically-boarded timber door with a pointed-arched wing to the left on the north elevation. The corners are again clasped by buttresses, with windows flanking the center in the principal gablehead.
The windows have timber fixed-lights, with multi-pane designs for the pulpit windows, 12-pane windows in the flanking bays, and 4-pane windows for the pointed-arched windows. The roofs are modern grey tiles with timber eaves.
Inside, the church features timber fittings, including a panelled semi-octagonal pulpit centered on the south wall, horizontally boarded pews with panelled fronts, and stairs at the east and west leading to a U-plan gallery with a panelled front, supported by square fluted columns.
The kirkyard is enclosed by a finely wrought drystone rubble wall, with capped gatepiers at the center of the north wall and at the east end of the south wall.
