Description

Eastfield Mills, dated 1882, is a near-symmetrical, two-storey and attic, nine-bay administration and warehouse block designed in the French Renaissance style. The outer bays feature advanced mansard roofs with balustraded balconies. To the west, there is a single-storey wing, and to the east, a pair of small cottages flanks the gateway. The building has close-set square attic openings, which were originally blind but are now windows, on all elevations. It is constructed from finely jointed bull-faced sandstone, with rusticated ashlar quoins and polished window margins. A string course and a modillioned eaves cornice are present, along with projecting cills and round-arched openings on the ground floor, which have hoodmoulds in the outer bays. The fenestration is regular, featuring tripartite windows in the centre and outer bays.

The principal south elevation has an off-centre entrance to the left, framed by a pronounced consoled architrave adorned with large nailhead mouldings. The round-arched windows have prominent keystones that bear saltire crosses, while the first storey features square-headed openings. There is a central inscription in the attic, and above it, a tripartite window is set in a distinctive round-headed dormer, which also has an inscription in the dormerhead. Further round-headed dormers are located in the outer bays. The three-bay, single-storey wings have piended roofs, hoodmoulded windows, and decorative brattishing. There are non-traditional additions to the rear of the building.

Inside, the building has been extensively modernised but still retains some original features, including sections of exposed timber flooring, roof structure, and original stairwells. The windows predominantly have a non-traditional four-pane pattern with casement and fixed light designs, along with non-traditional skylights. The east elevation features a coped wallhead stack. The roof is covered with blue slate, and there are lead flashings and cast-iron rainwater goods.
