Description
South Lodge at Peelwalls House is a gate lodge built around 1830, with later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey, three-bay structure designed in a classical style, featuring a flat-roofed rear addition that creates a near T-plan. The front and sides are constructed from coursed, vertically-droved cream sandstone, with sandstone ashlar dressings, while the rear addition is made of harl-pointed rubble. The building includes a base course, an eaves course, and overhanging bracketed eaves. It has lugged and architraved margins, sandstone mullions, and projecting, painted, stop-chamfered cills.
On the south (entrance) elevation, there is a centrally located timber panelled door with a letterbox fanlight above, framed by a classical surround that features panelled pilasters, a plain frieze, and a cornice. The bays on either side of the entrance contain tripartite windows with narrow side-lights.
The west (side) elevation shows the original three-bay block on the right, which has a blind, round-arched niche at the center and single windows in the flanking bays. The flat-roofed addition is recessed to the outer left and includes a square-headed doorway set in a coped rubble wall at the front.
The north (rear) elevation was not visible in 1998. The east (side) elevation mirrors the west side, with the original three-bay block on the left featuring a blind, round-arched niche at the center and single windows in the flanking bays, while the flat-roofed addition is recessed to the outer right.
The windows are fitted with 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, featuring a brick-built central ridge stack and octagonal stacks. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 1998.
