Description
The Railway Bridge in Ayton, designed by Robert Dodds in 1845, features two linked single-arched railway bridges set at angles, spanning separate roads. The bridges are constructed from pointed rubble, which is squared and snecked in parts, with sandstone ashlar dressings, rubble abutments, coursed soffits, and rubble wing walls.
The west bridge has a large, segmental-arched opening with raised voussoirs. It is flanked by full-height, slightly projecting pilasters that have raised quoins at the inner angles. There are raised string courses beneath the coped parapets, which have sandstone plaques centered above the openings. These plaques are inscribed with 'North British Railway, Ayton Contract, Robert Dodds Contractor, 1845.'
The east bridge features a smaller, round-arched opening with panelled voussoirs. It also has raised string courses beneath coped parapets and projecting wing walls, which are built up in part. Additionally, there is a small, round-arched opening that spans a stream to the southwest.
