Description
The Lodge and Gateway at Scott Park, Scott Crescent, Galashiels, was designed by D and J Bryce, likely John Bryce, and is dated 1881. This single-storey and attic structure features a three-bay, roughly L-plan Baronial style, characterized by prominent multiple projections and crow-stepped gables topped with ball finials. It is constructed from squared stugged buff sandstone with ashlar dressings, including a base course and a stepped moulded string-course, along with raised shouldered surrounds. There are lean-to extensions at the rear.
On the front (northwest) elevation, there is a projecting gabled porch to the right, which has open roll-moulded shouldered arches. To the left, a projecting gabled bay features gabletted corner bays. The windows are three-pane timber sash and case, and the roof is covered with purple slate. The crowsteps are adorned with scrolled skewputts, and there are chamfered corniced gablehead stacks. The building also has cast iron rainwater goods with decorative hoppers.
Access to the interior was not gained during the resurvey in 2005.
The gatepiers, gates, and boundary walls consist of low ashlar walls with moulded copes. There are decorative cast iron railings and gates featuring Gothic detailing. The gatepiers are highly decorative, square in plan with corner colonnettes, corbelled scrolled capstones, and urn finials. Rubble walls continue to the southeast.
