Description

Heronhill Lodge, located at 152 Weensland Road, is a single-storey Italianate gate lodge designed by John Thomas Rochead in 1865, with extensions made in the mid-20th century. The main block has an octagonal plan that expands to a square shape at the eaves, featuring concave quadrant arcs above the corner windows. The roof is piended and topped with a finial. There is a low porch on the east side, a low piend-roofed wing at the rear (south), and a lean-to extension on the west, creating a T-shaped layout. The building is constructed from tooled, squared, coursed yellow sandstone, with polished and droved ashlar dressings. Notable features include a dentilled eaves cornice, projecting bracketed cills, and a panelled detail above the central window on the principal elevation. The porch has timber-boarded doors set in keystoned, shouldered margins on the north and east elevations. There are twinned ornamental stacks at the rear of the main octagonal block.

The lodge has non-traditional uPVC windows and a grey slate roof with metal ridges. The ashlar stacks are panelled, corniced, and topped with semicircular pediments.

Inside, the principal part of the lodge consists of a single room with a large recess to the west, working timber shutters, tongue and groove panelling around the windows, and a simple cornice.

The gatepier is a pedestalled, panelled, corniced structure with a shallow pyramid cap, made of yellow sandstone. It is attached to the rear of the porch by an ashlar-coped, squared yellow sandstone wall.
