Description
8 Buccleuch Street in Hawick is an early 19th-century building with later additions, consisting of two traditional terraced residential blocks that are regularly fenestrated. The structure is made of roughly squared, coursed whinstone with painted, droved sandstone ashlar dressings and tabbed margins.
No 10 features a two-storey, basement, and attic principal elevation facing south, with four bays on the ground floor and three bays above. The basement windows are blocked, and there are three stone steps leading to a recessed front door that has a fanlight in a round-arched architrave. To the outer right, there is a round-arched opening leading to a pend. The roof includes a flat-roofed central dormer flanked by canted dormers, and there is a full-height, polygonal, rendered central stair tower with two canted dormers at the rear. Attached to the west side of the rear courtyard is a single-storey and attic house made of yellow brick.
No 12 also has a two-storey and basement principal elevation facing south, with four bays on the ground floor and three bays above. Like No 10, the basement windows are blocked, and there are three stone steps leading to a recessed main door with a rectangular fanlight. There is a secondary door with a rectangular multi-pane fanlight to the outer right.
Both buildings feature a 4-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case windows at No 10, while No 12 has non-traditional uPVC windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate, graded at No 10 and uniform at No 12, and both have coped ashlar and brick stacks with circular clay cans.
