Description
The War Memorial in Traquair, built in 1920, commemorates those who served during the First World War from 1914 to 1918. It features a rustic cross mounted on a boulder base, situated within a cobbled area that is enclosed by painted wrought-iron railings. The memorial consists of a rusticated sandstone shaft and cross, which have polished angle margins, and a rock-faced granite base.
On the principal elevation, the cross and shaft are roughly hewn and divided into two sections. The central boss is carved with a cross and has a moulded surround, while the lateral arms bear the inscription "LEST WE FORGET." The shaft is inscribed with the names of the deceased. The large boulder base is complemented by an additional small sloped stone at the center. The rectangular railing enclosure includes a gate on the right side.
