Description

Turtleton is a house dating from 1849, designed by W J Gray, with later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay building constructed in a manse style, accompanied by a single-storey coach house and stable, and a separate outbuilding. The house is built of squared and snecked stugged sandstone with droved ashlar dressings, featuring a base course and flush quoins. A single-storey addition extends from the ground floor of the south-east elevation, marked by a string course and coped parapet.

The south-east elevation features a gabled bay centrally advanced and breaking the eaves. A two-leaf panelled door, fitted with a rectangular plate glass fanlight, is set within a later single-storey projection. Above the door is a window, and an arrow opening with a rounded top is located in the gablehead; kneelers and an ashlar finial adorn the gable. Flanking the central bay are canted projections at ground level, each topped with a gabled dormerhead above the first-floor windows.

The south-west elevation presents a four-bay facade, with windows at ground floor to the inner bays. First-floor windows are gabled and break the eaves. A gabled bay to the far right features windows on both floors, and a blinded round-arched arrow opening in the gablehead, finished with kneelers and an ashlar finial. A single-storey bay extends to the outer right, featuring a modern glazed door and window.

The north-west elevation is composed of two gabled bays, each with kneelers and wallhead coped stacks. A single-storey addition runs parallel to the north-west elevation and adjoins the bay to the right at ground level. To the southeast of the addition is a modern door and two windows, while the north-west elevation of the addition presents a gabled two-bay group, with a window in the inner right bay and another to the left. A partly blinded door with glass bricks above is located to the outer right.

The windows are timber sash and case, primarily with plate glass, although some original eight-pane windows remain. The roof is slate covered. The interior was not inspected in 1995.

The coach house and stables are located to the north-east of the main house. The south-west elevation has three bays, including a centrally placed segmentally-arched opening with stop-chamfered edges, leading to a pair of boarded doors. The bay to the right is slightly advanced and gabled, with a window to the left and a blinded slit opening with an ashlar finial in the gablehead. A blank bay is located to the left, with an ashlar mounting block. The north-west elevation is gabled, with a segmentally-arched opening, now a garage, and a window above. The north-east elevation features three bays to the left, with a split boarded door to the centre and a window in the bay to the right. A half-piended window breaks the eaves at the attic level. The coach house has timber multi-paned hopper windows and a slate roof. The interior was not inspected in 1995.

The single-storey outbuilding is situated to the north-west of the main house. Its south-east elevation has three bays grouped to the right, each with a boarded door and a window between the centre and right bays. The outbuilding has four-pane timber sash and case windows and a piended slate roof. The interior was not inspected in 1995.

A tall rubble boundary wall with a coped top runs along the south edge of the property.
