Description
Stobs Viaduct was built around 1860 for The North British Railway. It is a tall structure featuring four semi-circular arches supported by three narrow piers, with earth embankments at either end, spanning Barnes Burn and a minor road. The viaduct is constructed with whinstone voussoirs and has piers made of brick and coursed whinstone rubble. The spandrels are made of rubble and are marked to resemble ashlar, leading up to a low ashlar parapet that has later been fitted with open wire fencing. The east and west elevations show the tall viaduct with its four arches and the whinstone rubble piers, which include some brick repair work. Diagonally angled cast-iron pipes are installed to drain the track bed into the second arch above the burn. The track has since been dismantled.
