Description
The North Wing of the stables and coach house at Clifton Park dates from the mid-19th century and is designed in an L-plan layout. It consists of a single-storey, five-bay wing to the west, which is advanced at the centre, and a single-storey, single-bay wing to the north that connects to a projecting rectangular-plan, single-storey with attic, two-bay block to the northeast. The building is constructed from harled whinstone rubble, which is partially exposed, and features polished and droved cream sandstone dressings, raised sandstone quoins, chamfered surrounds to openings, and chamfered cills.
On the west wing's east elevation, which faces the courtyard, the central gabled bay is advanced and has a broad Tudor-arched opening at the ground level, with a timber panelled loft door positioned above on a projecting cill. The remaining bays on this elevation have single windows that are recessed to the outer left and right. The rear elevation features a similar advanced gabled bay with single windows on both floors, and single windows in the recessed bays to the left and right. There are also two-leaf boarded timber garage doors in the single-storey wing, recessed to the outer left.
The south elevation of the north wing has two-leaf boarded timber doors set in two round-arched carriage openings at ground level, with a single window centred in the apex above. A two-leaf boarded timber garage door is located in the single-storey linking wing, also recessed to the outer left.
The building predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, although some glazing and astragals are missing. There are also external scalloped timber pelmet details and a small skylight on the north side. The roofs are covered with graded grey slate, and the raised stone skews are partially missing. The building has a coped wallhead stack to the north, which is missing its cans, and a stepped wallhead stack to the west with circular cans.
Inside, the vestibule of the west wing has geometric-patterned setts, boarded timber doors, and boarded timber dado panelling, along with a grain-shoot still in place. The remainder of the interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
The courtyard in front of the building features regularly-patterned setts.
