Description

Crookston Old House is a former laird's residence dating from the 17th century, with 19th century additions and possibly incorporating elements from a 15th century tower in the east wing. The building is two storeys high with a garret and features a T-plan layout. It consists of a rectangular block with a later central wing that projects to the south. The exterior is made of whitewashed harled rubble with pink and buff-coloured sandstone dressings, and it has irregular window placements with chamfered margins. The roof has piend-roofed dormers that break the eaves.

On the south elevation, there is an advanced gabled wing at the center, featuring fairly regular fenestration and a timber door on the left side. To the left, there is a two-storey canted window with a blocking course above it and two dormers. On the right, there is a half-glazed timber door, with a stone-mullioned bipartite window and a single dormer above. The east wing gable has an asymmetrical crowstep and is recessed at the north elevation, with three dormers breaking the eaves on the right side.

Inside, the ground floor includes a kitchen with the remains of a substantial stone fireplace and a former parlour that has 18th century timber panelling up to the ceiling height. There is a 17th century moulded door surround on the ground floor that connects to the 19th century south gable wing. A stone turnpike stair rises to the full height of the building, providing the only access to the principal rooms on the first floor.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case with 2 and 4-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring coped end stacks and a further co-axial ridge stack towards the east end. The building also has clay cans and cast-iron rainwater goods.
