Description

The Old Cloth Hall, located on Scott Crescent in Galashiels, was built in 1792 and has undergone later additions and alterations. This two-storey, four-bay building features a square plan and has been converted into flats. It includes a single-storey curved section at the corner and later piended additions at the rear. A central shouldered eaves stack is present, along with tripartite windows and a margined stair window on the southern side. There is a lugged architraved former doorway on the ground floor and external stairs leading to the first floor, which is accompanied by a 20th-century porch on the west side. To the east, there is a later lean-to double garage.

The building is constructed with rendered stonework, smooth painted stone margins, and strip quoins, along with a painted base course. The curved section to the east features rubble stonework and sandstone margins. It has timber sash and case windows, pitched and piended slate roofs, gable end stacks, and tall corniced eaves stacks at the rear with octagonal clay cans. Additionally, there are cast-iron rooflights and rainwater goods.

The boundary walls consist of rubble walls with angled coping, and there is a substantial red sandstone corniced ashlar gateway with a boarded door on the north wall. A lower random rubble wall at the rear connects the gateway to Gala House.
