Description

The Walled Garden at Broomhill House is a late 18th century, two-storey and attic farmhouse that was extended around 1820 with a wing at right angles to the southwest, forming an L-plan, along with a service wing adjoining to the northwest at the rear. The interior was also remodeled during this time. In the 1930s, a single-storey pavilion was added to the northwest of the 1820 wing. The exterior is harled with red sandstone margins.

On the southwest elevation, there is a porch in the re-entrant angle of the 1820 wing, featuring a two-leaf panelled door and a decorative fanlight with cast ornament in the spandrels. There is a half-glazed inner door, and windows flanking each floor have been enlarged from the earlier house. The advanced southwest gable of the wing has a pediment with two windows on each floor, and there is a single bay pavilion adjoining to the northwest. The service range is recessed, with a window on each floor and a modern attic dormer.

The northeast elevation, or rear, has two windows at ground level and a tall stair window in the center at the first floor, with an enlarged window to the left and a window to the right. There is a two-storey and attic service block adjoining the advanced gable, which has a door at ground level and a window on each floor, while the northeast elevation is blank. The windows are sash case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped skews and ashlar stacks with a simple cornice.

Inside, the house was extended and remodeled around 1820, featuring fine plasterwork and chimneypieces, with some mid-20th century alterations. The entrance hall has a scalloped ceiling rose and an elaborate cornice with scroll, bead, and Gothic pendentive motifs, which continues across the bracing arch. The stairwell has a simple cornice and a spiral stair with foliate cast-iron balusters. The principal rooms on the ground and first floors have fine scroll and acanthus leaf cornices, with circa 1820 fire surrounds made of wood and composition with marble strips in a classical style, featuring a frieze with naturalistic ornament.

The walled garden to the southwest has rubble coped walls, with gates featuring stone overthrows to the northeast and southwest, although the gates are later additions. At the rear of the house is a horse mill, which formerly served a now largely demolished steading to the northeast and has been recently restored. It consists of six rubble piers with ashlar dressings, supporting a slated conical roof.
