Description
East Church, located on Eden Road in Gordon, was built in 1843 with additions made in 1893. The church is no longer used for religious purposes since 1992 and is situated next to cottages to the west. The original 1843 structure is made of whinstone with sandstone dressings, while the 1893 additions, including a porch and tower, are constructed of pink sandstone with polished cream ashlar dressings, creating an L-plan layout. The building features long and short quoins and window surrounds, as well as crow-stepped gables.
On the southeast elevation, there is an advanced gabled porch with a corbelled circular section bell tower positioned in the re-entrant angle to the left. The porch includes a roll-moulded round-arched doorway with an inscription above, flanked by two-leaf wrought-iron gates. The ground level has chamfered angles, and above, there is a round-arched painted glass window at the first floor with a hoodmould. The corbelled tower has single windows at the first floor, a "1893" datestone, and four clocks. Above the tower, there is an arcade of round-arched openings topped by a pepperpot roof with a lead finial. The main body of the church consists of three bays, each containing a round-arched window.
The east elevation features a single window at the ground level of the east gable. The church has fixed small-pane windows, a grey slate roof, stone fleur-de-lys finials, and two brick stacks on the north side. The interior has had its original fittings removed.
