Description
The Old Manse, located at St Michael's Church on Manse Road in Gordon, dates back to 1803, incorporating some earlier elements. This two-storey and attic, three-bay, U-shaped Classical manse features a gabled roof with canted dormers. To the northwest, there is a lower piend-roofed service wing, and to the northeast, a single-storey modern wing. The exterior is finished with harled and washed masonry, accented by droved sandstone ashlar dressings, most of which are painted. The building has an eaves course and tabbed quoins, with a regular arrangement of windows on the front that have raised margins. Access is through two steps leading to a nine-panelled recessed timber door, framed by a simple architrave with Doric pilasters and a cornice adorned with small triglyphs. Above the door is a fanlight featuring a decorative glazing pattern.
The windows predominantly consist of 12- and 9-pane glazing in timber sash and case styles. The gable ends have ashlar-coped stacks, while the rear elevation features a wallhead ashlar-coped brick stack, both topped with octagonal yellow clay cans. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate and have zinc ridges.
Inside, the manse displays simple Classical detailing, with some Edwardian alterations. Throughout the building, there are six-panelled doors and simple cornices. A cantilevered timber staircase with Edwardian balusters and rail rises in front of a central rear window. The dining room features an original black marble chimneypiece and a segmental-arched buffet niche flanked by Doric pilasters. The drawing room is decorated with a Greek key-patterned dado rail, while the kitchen has a large stone chimneypiece. On the first floor, there are timber chimneypieces with tiled inserts, likely from the Edwardian period, while those on the second floor are original.
The property includes a walled garden, which is enclosed by rubble walls topped with rounded rubble coping and features a timber boarded entrance gate at the southeast corner.
