Description
Neidpath Viaduct, opened in 1864 for the Caledonian Railway, is a skewed eight-span former railway viaduct that crosses the River Tweed. It features rock-faced ashlar spandrels and voussoirs, with low stone parapets complemented by cast-iron intermediate parapets.
On the north elevation, the rock-faced spandrels and voussoirs lead to a skewed intrados. Rusticated buttress pilasters, decorated with cruciform arrow slits and smooth angle margins, extend from rounded cutwaters. A semicircular course leads to a stone and painted cast-iron parapet, with squared piers formed from buttresses linking to the cast-iron parapet. The eighth arch meets the embankment, with later steps leading to the track bed, which is now a footpath.
The south elevation mirrors the north, featuring rock-faced spandrels and voussoirs leading to a skewed intrados, along with rusticated buttress pilasters and a semicircular course leading to an ashlar and painted cast-iron parapet. The first and eighth arches meet embankments on either side of the River Tweed.
The east to west elevation includes sections of droved ashlar parapet wall at both ends, with flat copes and slightly projecting bases that have chamfered angles. Rusticated end returns feature polished angle margins. The elevation also displays sections of geometrically patterned, painted cast-iron parapet, joined by squared stone piers that rise at regular intervals from the buttresses, flanking the full length of the former track bed, now a footpath.
