Description

Dated 1837, with a porch added in the late 19th century, the Redpath Village Hall is a single-storey, three-bay former school building prominently situated in the hamlet of Redpath. The building is harled with dressings of dove-red sandstone and a sandstone base course to the front. The principal, or SE, elevation has bays grouped towards the centre, with a window in each bay, the central window replacing a former door. The lintel of the outer right window displays a panel inscribed with ‘Misericordia et Pax’. A piended porch, likely dating to around 1900, abuts the right return gable, having a door to the front, and being blank on the return and rear. The rear elevation features three irregularly spaced windows. The building has blank gables, with a polygonal ashlar stack topped with a masque corbel at the NE gable, and a later brick stack at the SW gable. It has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, purple slates, and lead flashings.

The building operated as a school until around 1900. The schoolmaster’s desk and related equipment remain inside. The date "1837" is inscribed on the interior above the former central doorway. The building is listed at category B for its historical significance in the hamlet, its largely unaltered form, decorative gableheads, and the apparent survival of original interior details.
