Description
The ornamental gate piers and gates at West Lodge, Milne Graden, were likely designed by James Gillespie Graham around 1826. This single-storey, three-bay gatelodge features a rectangular plan and a piend roof, showcasing a Classical style with a projecting Tuscan order portico. The building is constructed from cream polished sandstone ashlar, while the small 20th-century rear extensions are rendered. It has a base course, a moulded eaves course, and a blocking course, along with raised moulded window margins and projecting cills.
On the west (entrance) elevation, there is a wide distyle pedimented portico with Tuscan pilasters flanking a recessed six-panelled timber entrance door. The elevation is symmetrical with flanking windows. However, the windows are non-traditional uPVC, designed to imitate the original 12-pane glazing pattern. A central brick stack with yellow clay cans sits atop the grey slate roof.
The gatepiers and gates, also from around 1826, consist of four elaborate cast-iron square-section gatepiers for both vehicle and pedestrian entrances. These piers feature geometric and floral decorations, including a Greek key pattern on the finials. The central piers are topped with brackets for lamps, while the outer piers are adorned with crosses and acorn finials. The spear-head cast-iron gates echo the decorative motifs of the piers. Additionally, there are low curved, coped ashlar wing walls and square ashlar piers at the road, which have moulded overhanging pyramidal caps.
