Description

North Lodge at Ladykirk House is a single-storey, three-bay lodge built around 1850-1860 by John Dobson. It features a cruciform plan and is designed in a Classical style with a piend roof. The lodge is constructed from polished pink sandstone ashlar, while the rear extensions are rendered. Architectural details include a base course, a plain frieze, a cornice, and raised cills.

The front elevation showcases a distyle portico raised on two shallow steps, flanked by two Tuscan pilasters. The portico features a recessed four-panelled door with a plain glazed two-pane timber fanlight above. The tympanum of the pediment is carved with a coronet and the letter M.

The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and has zinc ridges, along with a single central ashlar stack that has a moulded cope, one yellow clay can, and one modern metal can.

The gatepiers, walls, and gates date from the 19th century. They consist of four pyramidal-capped gatepiers linked by convex curved wing walls to ball-finialled piers at the edge of the road. The central vehicle entrance has tall gatepiers, while the flanking pedestrian entrances have smaller, identical gatepiers. These features include a base course, moulded cornice, and squat pyramidal capstones, with spear-headed iron gates. The low curved walls have a base course and moulded cope. The gatepiers along the road are similar to those at the centre but are capped by stone balls on squared blocks. All elements are made from pink polished ashlar sandstone, and there are continuous tall squared rubble walls that provide pedestrian access to the lodge.
