Description

The former schoolhouse at 67 Gala Park, designed by John Starforth between 1874 and 1875, features a two-storey, three-bay asymmetrical T-plan in a Gothic style. It is set back from the street on raised ground and includes advanced double-gabled bays on the right. The entrance has an equilateral arched doorway with a recessed shouldered arch, while the ground floor displays pointed arched openings with recessed tripartite mullioned and transomed windows. A shaped hoodmould adorns the first-floor tripartite window. The building has half-hipped roofs with bracketed barge boards and overhanging eaves, constructed from coursed rubble with rock-faced sandstone quoins and margins that have smooth chamfers. A moulded string course runs along the first floor.

The windows are round-headed three-pane timber sash and case, complemented by a boarded timber door. The roof is covered with graduated slates, and there are corniced staged ashlar stacks along with cast-iron rainwater goods and decorative hoppers.

Inside, the schoolhouse retains a good decorative scheme, featuring a panelled etched glass entrance screen, six-panel chamfered doors, plain chamfered fire surrounds, and a double dog-leg stair with cast iron balusters. Fine detailing is present in the interior windows.

The boundary walls and railings consist of low rubble coped walls at the front, which include integral central entrance steps. Pyramidal ashlar pillars are located on the sides, connecting to taller stone walls at the sides and rear. A cast-iron gate links to the adjacent playground.
