Description
The bridge over the Tweed in Walkerburn was designed by Orr, Watt & Co Ltd in 1914 for Peeblesshire County Council. It features a four-span structure made of painted steel truss construction, supported by heavy steel rivets on ashlar piers and cutwaters, with droved ashlar wing walls.
On the east and west elevations, there are pairs of curved wing walls with segmental coping that end in slightly taller squared piers with chamfered caps. These walls also support the outer spans of the bridge. The main bridge consists of four main spans with bowed trusses, each divided into twelve sections. The outer four sections have one diagonal riveted support leading towards the center, while the central four sections feature two riveted supports that form a diagonal cross for added strength. Additionally, five triangular supports extend from the inner uprights of each span to provide extra stability. The outer spans are supported by pairs of circular masonry piers, and the center of the bridge is held up by a rectangular masonry pier that rests on a diamond cutwater. Throughout the bridge, there are manufacturer's shield-shaped plaques that read "ORR, WATT & CO Ltd. 1914. MOTHERWELL."
