Description
This is a rare, prefabricated cast iron urinal dating to circa 1897, constructed by the Saracen Foundry (a patent from Macfarlane's of Glasgow). It is a single-story, rectangular structure with an open entrance bay and two stalls. The urinal is sectional, built from painted cast iron.
The west (principal) elevation is three bays wide. The first bay is open, providing the entrance. The central and right bays contain identical pairs of four-panelled sections, joined by iron uprights housing urinals. The lower panels are plain, while the panels above are embossed with a patterned design centered around a round detail. The right panel of the embossed section reads "SARACEN FOUNDRY MACFARLANES PATENT GLASGOW." This is topped by ornamental fretwork and an arch-ended ventilator panel.
The north elevation is open, abutting the south elevation of a stone building related to Caberston Farm. The east (rear) elevation mirrors the west, featuring three identical four-panelled sections with the same embossed detail and ornamentation. The south elevation is similar to the west, with a plain lower panel, embossed upper panel, fretwork, and ventilator.
The urinal lacks glazing, but has narrow arch-ended ventilators and ornamental fretwork in the upper sections. The entrance is open-topped with a flat roof over the stalls, finished with a decorative cornice featuring iron teeth. Instead of conventional rainwater goods, gargoyle waterspouts in the form of crouched composite animal figures are located on the front and rear elevations.
Inside, the entrance leads to two stalls divided by an iron screen with a quadrant top and decorative teeth. Each stall is embossed with the message "PLEASE ADJUST YOUR DRESS BEFORE LEAVING." Ventilation panels are present in the upper sections of all elevations.
The urinal remains in use. Walkerburn village developed around the Tweedvale and Tweedholm Mills, providing housing for workers. As the village grew, so did its public amenities including pavements, roadways, and street lighting. This urinal was installed towards the end of the 19th century, and a County Sanitary Inspector noted it represented a significant improvement to the village. The urinal is listed for its rarity and good condition, situated in a field adjacent to Caberston Farm Buildings, across the road from Tweedvale Mill.
