Description
Fogo School, built in 1864 by David Duns of Duns, is a single-storey, 7-bay L-plan building that now serves as a nursery. It is constructed of squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone, with sandstone ashlar dressings. The exterior features stugged quoins, stugged long and short surrounds to chamfered openings, sandstone mullions, and chamfered cills.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, a gabled wing is advanced to the outer right, featuring steps leading to a timber door located in the bay to the left, which has a 2-pane fanlight and a depressed arched surround. To the right, there is a single window at ground level. A sandstone plaque dated around 1864 is centered beneath the apex, topped with a sandstone finial. The 5-bay wing to the left is recessed and has a boarded timber door at the center with a 2-pane fanlight. There are bipartite windows in the bays flanking the center, a bipartite window in the outer left bay, and a tripartite window in the outer right bay.
The southwest (side) elevation features a boarded timber addition at ground level. The northwest (rear) elevation was not visible in 1998. The northeast (side) elevation has a gabled bay offset to the right of center, with a bipartite window breaking the eaves at the center and a single window aligned above, also topped with a sandstone finial.
The building predominantly features 4-pane lying-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. It has a grey slate roof with sawtooth-coped stone skews and moulded brackets beneath the gabletted skewputts.
Inside, there are two classrooms flanking a central vestibule, with boarded timber dado panelling, coombed ceilings, and timber panelled doors. The site is enclosed at the front by hooped iron railings and features an iron pedestrian gate.
