4-8 High Street

2 High Street is a multi-use commercial building constructed in 1927, featuring three and four storeys with upper breaking eaves. It is a corner block consisting of three bays on Channel Street and two bays extending seven bays along High Street.

On the Channel Street side, the building has a prominent polygonal corner tower topped with a polygonal roof and overhanging eaves. There is a two-storey canted bay on the outer right and a mock half-timbered attic storey. The exterior is made of squared buff sandstone with ashlar dressings, and the ground floor features plate glass shopfronts. A tiled stall riser and a band course at the base of the attic floor are also present. The steeply-pitched slate roof is slightly bell-cast and adorned with clay ridge tiles.

The High Street block consists of seven irregular bays, including a corner bay that returns to Overhaugh Street. This section is constructed of red sandstone with ashlar dressings. The ground floor has plate-glass shopfronts and channelled ashlar. To the left, there are large plate glass windows on the first floor with a continuous steel lintel, while the right side features single and bipartite windows. The roof includes pitch-roofed barge-boarded dormers with slated cheeks. The corner block has a blind bell-cote feature and a square mansard roof with iron brattishing, all topped with a purple slate roof and clay ridge tiles.

Access to the interior was limited during the resurvey in 2005, allowing only small areas to be examined.
