Description
Smiddyhill Bridge, dated 1887 with later repairs, is a two-arch bridge that spans the Whiteadder Water. It is constructed from pointed rubble, featuring tooled and polished cream sandstone dressings. The bridge has polished voussoirs on its segmental arches, with rubble abutments and soffits. Central piers are supported by curved cutwater buttresses, and paired pilasters are advanced at the outer ends, showcasing tooled quoins. Dated panels are centered in the spandrels beneath polished string courses that mark the flat deck, and the parapet walls have polished coping, which is splayed at either end.
