Description
The stable courtyard at Cranshaws Farm dates to the earlier 19th century. It is a rectangular arrangement of buildings surrounding a central courtyard. The eastern side consists of a single storey, four-bay range. A longer, single-storey range runs along the southern side, incorporating an implement shed/cartshed on the left, a single-bay projection set back to the right of centre, and three further bays to the right. To the west is a taller, single-storey, eight-bay stable range. A two-storey, L-shaped corner block adjoins the northwest corner, with a single bay facing east and two bays facing south. A large, modern brick-faced shed encloses the courtyard to the north.
The construction is predominantly of harl-pointed rubble sandstone, with some areas whitewashed, and sandstone dressings, some of which are droved (finely finished). The building features rubble quoins, long and short surrounds to openings, some raised margins, and projecting cills. Original features include boarded timber doors and two-pane fanlights above some openings.
The east-facing elevation of the western range features a broken six-pane window, stable doors, and a large sliding timber door. Two pyramidal-capped ridge ventilators are positioned off-set to the right of centre. The north-facing elevation of the southern range has a stable door, a single window, a dividing column within the implement shed/cartshed, a mono-pitched projection, and a window, single opening, and sliding timber door. The east-facing elevation of the western range has a centrally located door with a fanlight, and a mix of windows, stable doors, and segmental-arched lights. The northwest corner includes a boarded timber door and a single window on the ground floor. The rear elevation of the western range features regularly-spaced segmental-arched stable lights. The south-facing elevation of the northern range includes sliding timber doors, a smaller sliding timber door, a squat, three-pane window, and a brick-faced modern range.
Glazing consists of three-, four-, and six-pane timber windows, some with shuttered vented lower sections. Segmental-arched stable lights are primarily protected by metal grills, while the remaining windows have plate glass. The original ranges have piended roofs covered in grey slate, with terracotta ridge tiling and pyramidal-capped ridge ventilators; a later projection has a corrugated-iron roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
Internally, the courtyard buildings contain stables, storage areas, and a tack room. The interior features open timber ceilings, brick partitions forming stalls, concrete floors, and predominantly rendered walls, some of which are whitewashed. Some sections of random rubble are exposed. A cobbled surface is present in parts of the courtyard.
