Description
Edrom Newton Farm Cottage No. 4 is a single-storey cottage with an attic, built in 1876 and featuring later additions and alterations. It is part of a symmetrical row of Jacobean-style cottages, constructed from stugged squared and snecked sandstone ashlar with droved ashlar stop-chamfered dressings, while the rear is harled.
The southeast elevation has eight bays arranged in a 1-3-2-3-1 grouping. The central two bays have a curvilinear gable that is slightly advanced, featuring a boarded door with a letter box fanlight between the bays at ground level, flanked by bipartite windows. Each bay has a bipartite round-arch headed window on the first floor, and there is a datestone plaque at the gablehead. The three-bay groups on either side are identical, with a boarded door in the center and a 2-pane letter box fanlight above, set within an advanced lean-to porch. Each inner bay has a 4-light canted window at ground level and a curvilinear gabled dormer with a bipartite window that breaks the eaves in the attic, topped with an ashlar finial. The outer bays are advanced with broad curvilinear gables, each featuring a 4-light canted window at ground level that transitions to a square shape at the first floor, with a bipartite window at the gablehead of the canted window.
The southwest and northeast elevations each have three bays. There is a gablet porch supported by tapered pilasters with a strapwork band, leading to a boarded door with a letter box fanlight above. Each flanking bay has a bipartite window at ground level and a curvilinear dormer-headed bipartite window in the attic, breaking the eaves and each topped with an ashlar finial. The entrance to No. 1 is on the northeast side, while the entrance to No. 5 is on the southwest side.
The northwest elevation has some later lean-to additions at the rear and features curvilinear gables on each of the advanced outer bays. The cottage has five timber sash and case windows, except at the rear. The roof is covered with graded slate, and there are brick stacks at the ridge. The interior was altered in 1996.
