Description

This is a single-span rubble bridge, likely dating to around 1780, built over the Leader Water. It is also known as 'Eagle Bridge' due to its proximity to the Eagle Gates at the southern entrance to Thirlestane Castle. The bridge is buttressed at one end, incorporating an archway within a square recess. Coped parapets have been added to either end, and it provides a single carriageway.

The bridge's archway set within a squared recess contributes significantly to the landscape at the foot of the town. It sits on the line of the southern boundary wall of Thirlestane Castle, though it is not part of the estate. Funds were raised for its construction, with 47 guineas being subscribed in 1772-73, and subsequent payments recorded in the Scotts family of Harden’s cash book in 1776.

Historical records suggest an earlier bridge with the same name existed in 1482. This earlier bridge is believed to have been the site of the capture and hanging of several close associates of King James III of Scotland, including mason and architect Robert Cochrane. It is thought to have spanned the Leader along the line of a now-disused road between The Row and Norton. The bridge is shown on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map from 1855-7.
