Houston Cottage, North Street, Houston

Houston Cottage, built in 1829, is a single-storey building that has cellars and a garret. The exterior is rendered, and it features a slated roof with two piended dormers at the front and one at each end. The windows have moulded architraves, and there is a moulded doorway with side-lights, which is accessed by a stair. The eaves-cornice is supported on brackets at the doorway and pilasters at the ends. The building has set-back wings, which are likely later additions, that feature crenellated wall-heads and hood-mouldings above the windows. At the rear, there are ancillary buildings including a gig-house (and byre), a stable (and cart-house), and a bothy, all constructed of rubble, lime-washed, and topped with slated roofs. There is also a pump on the property.
