Description
Place of Paisley is a mansion that dates back to the 17th century, with later restorations and a tower added in 1964 by architect J. Steel. The building occupies the east and south sides of the Abbey Cloister and is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings.
The northeast block has a T-plan layout and stands four storeys tall with an attic. Its west gabled wall features two bays with small paned sash windows on each floor, along with small attic windows. The east wall has one window on each floor, while the north wall abuts St. Mirren's Chapel. The south wall has no windows on the ground floor, and the third-floor windows are raised through the eaves, topped with dormer heads. A short arm projects from the building, featuring a forestair leading to the first floor. The roof is slate-covered, with crow-stepped skews and skewputts, along with end stacks.
A large south addition was constructed in 1675, forming an L-plan that is two storeys high with an attic, and is similarly detailed to the northeast block. The west gable has a straight skew to the south and one step to the north skew. Two square towers project from the west end wall, with the northern corner tower raised in 1961-1962, featuring a blocked segmentally-arched door at ground level. The pyramidal slate roof caps the addition, while the southern tower is two storeys high and continues the roofline of the main block, featuring a piend at the corner and a straight skew to the north wall.
Inside, the mansion includes some panelled rooms and fireplaces on the first and second floors. Notably, there is a fine late 17th-century ceiling in the southeast room on the second floor.
