Description
1 Arthurstone Gardens is a walled garden dating from around 1800, featuring earlier stone fragments. It includes a large, rectangular layout with a distinctive, slightly curved house that has a four-storey tower and a greenhouse located at the northeast corner. There is also an inset decorative timber summerhouse on the north wall. The structure is built of rubble with smooth margins and incorporates some older stonework and artefacts, possibly from the 13th century Cistercian Abbey at Coupar Angus.
The walled garden is enclosed by a tall, coped rubble wall, which has an elliptical-arched opening to the south and several rectangular openings. The opening in the west wall is particularly notable for its elaborate inset Corinthian pilasters and dentilled cornice. In the northwest corner, there is a two-storey building with a piended roof, featuring both rectangular and round window openings. The wall in this area includes a moulded doorway, carved pediments, and other decorative stonework.
The summerhouse is a timber structure set into a semi-elliptical stone arch on the north wall, showcasing Gothic detailing. It has a central part-glazed door flanked by side lights, with bays separated by engaged barley-sugar columns. The summerhouse also features a dentilled frieze and a tympanum adorned with carved timber floriated gothic glazed panels, flanked by truncated Ionic capitals from the Coupar Angus Cistercian Abbey.
The house at 1 Arthurstone Gardens, located in the northeast corner, is a single-storey, curved lean-to structure facing northeast. It has a central, tall four-stage octagonal crenellated tower with an external stone stair on the left side. The rear wall includes a single-storey greenhouse with an advanced, pedimented porch. The building is topped with prominent barley-sugar twist ridge chimney cans and features a segmental-arched doorway leading to the tower, which has blind bullseye windows on the top stage. The windows are predominantly replacement multi-pane types, and the roof is covered with grey slates, with gable stacks.
