Description
The former Free Church, now known as Sanfina UK Ltd, was built in 1843 by Carles Spence of Rait. This understated Tudor Gothic church features a squat entrance tower capped with a pyramid and a four-bay aisled nave. The exterior is constructed of snecked rubble with stugged ashlar quoins and includes band courses and pointed-arch openings, with timber mullions and chamfered arrises.
On the north elevation, the entrance features a finialled two-stage tower at the center, which has a broad hoodmoulded pointed-arch doorway with a panelled timber door. Above the door is a clock set in a roundel, and a band course leads to a low second stage that has two closely aligned louvered openings facing north, east, and west. Flanking the tower are piend-roofed aisles, each containing two square-headed two-light traceried windows in the lower bays located in the re-entrants.
The east elevation, facing Church Lane, has a two-light traceried window in each bay of the four-bay nave, with the ground sloping steeply to the south. The penultimate bay on the right has a small opening that abuts the base of the window.
The west elevation, which overlooks the old churchyard, mirrors the east elevation but features altered windows, with the left of center window being blocked. The south elevation is largely blank, with a gable at the center and piended outer bays, the left bay having a small square basement window.
The building is topped with a grey slate and corrugated-iron roof, and has cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers on the south side. Inside, the church retains cast-iron columns.
