Description
Rannoch Station, attributed to James Miller, was built between 1893 and 1894. It is a single-storey, rectangular-plan, near-symmetrical island station building featuring a deep swept roof that extends over canopies on either side. The building has a painted base course and a brick plinth, with timber framing covered in scalloped shingle. Panelled angle pilasters accentuate the corners, and there are glazed screens on the outer left and right. The timber panelled doors are topped with three-light fanlights, and the windows are bipartite and canted. The swept eaves are supported by carved consoles, forming the canopies.
The windows are timber framed and have astragals in the upper section. The roof has three brick ridge stacks and is covered with felt, originally cedar shingles.
The interior has been remodelled for use as the Rannoch Moor Visitors Centre, which opened in 2005.
To the northeast of the station building is the signal box, a square-plan structure built by the North British Railway Company, classified as Type 6a. It features a painted ashlar plinth and a brick base with dentils below the cills. The upper panels are glazed and timber framed, with fixed nine-pane glazing, and there is a six-pane glazed panel in the door. The signal box has a piended roof with lead flashings, projecting eaves, and exposed rafters, housing a 17 lever locking frame. This building has been preserved as part of the Rannoch Moor Visitor Centre.
Additionally, there is a stone sculptured relief portrait of J H Renton located at the northern end of the platform.
