Description
Aldie Castle is an oblong tower-house built in the early 16th century, featuring extensions that create a very small courtyard. The tower has three storeys and a garret, with a corbie stepped design and corbelled turrets at the corners. The first storey is vaulted and shows traces of an entresol floor. A turnpike stair leads up from the hall located on the second storey. In the later 16th century, a two-storeyed wing was added to the south side, followed by a three-storeyed wing on the east side. Between this eastern wing and the tower, a scale-and-platt stair and a new entrance were constructed in the 17th century, featuring the arms of the Mercers above it.
