Description
1-2 King James Place in Perth is a classical terrace building designed by William M Mackenzie, begun around 1840 and completed around 1887. It features two storeys, an attic, and a basement, comprising 15 bays arranged in five sections of three bays each. The building has three-storey end pavilions and returns of five bays to the east and four bays to the west. The exterior is primarily constructed of ashlar stone, with rubble at the rear, and includes cill courses and a cornice. The entrance steps extend over the basement, and there are three pairs of piended dormers above the central nine bays.
The central nine bays contain six-panel timber entrance doors located at the first, fourth, and seventh bays, each with rectangular fanlights above, some featuring a Gothic glazing pattern. The west pavilion has round-arched openings on the ground floor and corniced windows on the first floor. The central entrance door of the west pavilion is a four-panel timber door topped with a semicircular fanlight that has a fan glazing pattern. The east pavilion features tripartite windows with stone mullions in the slightly advanced outer bays.
The street elevation predominantly showcases plate glass timber sash and case windows, while the rear includes some 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with grey slates and have piended designs on the end pavilions, with wallhead and ridge stacks.
The boundary wall to the south, which returns to the east and west along King Street and James Street, is a low, coped coursed rubble wall.
