Description

284 High Street is a single-storey, five-bay commercial office and workshop building designed by John Walker Smart and dated 1907. It occupies a prominent corner site and features a canted entrance bay and an unusual L-plan chimney stack with decorative cast-iron railings at the corner. The building is constructed from red sandstone ashlar with moulded dressings, and includes a base course, moulded cornice, and a coped parapet.

The corner office has a recessed timber panel door leading into the canted bay, topped by a date panel and a round-arched pediment. This entrance is flanked by a pair of quatrepartite basket-arched windows with stone mullions, high-set transoms, and leaded upper-lights.

The workshop sections that flank the office are four bays wide along High Street, featuring large plate glass windows with timber astragals in their upper parts, and dentils on the upper frames. Plain pilasters divide the bays, which rise to swept-blocking at the parapet.

The roof is covered with grey slate, and the L-plan chimney stack is adorned with cast-iron ornamental railings at the corner.

Inside, the principal office area is fitted with timber panelling and partitioning, a panelled door, a fireplace, and fitted units. The flooring consists of mosaic tiles, and there is flower motif plaster cornicing. The toilet to the left of the office also features timber panelling. The workshops have polished grey brick walls with red sandstone dressings, and there is a cast-iron spiral staircase with barley-twist balustrades. The interior includes signage and a cobbled set floor with machine tracks down the centre, flanked by recessed inspection pits.
