Description
Kinross House is a classic mansion built between 1684 and 1695 by Sir William Bruce, who was both the architect and owner. The house features two main storeys, with an attic storey above the entablature, constructed of ashlar stone. It has a rusticated basement and is 11 bays wide, with the outer three bays at each end projecting and supported by giant Corinthian pilasters at the corners. The portico on the west side is a modern copy based on original drawings, while the east portico is original. The piended slated roof, which was renewed in 1863, has a platform on top with a central lantern-light.
The interior of the house is particularly impressive, especially the Entrance Hall and Stair, the Garden Hall, and the Oak Room. On the west side, there are short quadrant corridors that connect the mansion to small garden houses, with polygonal sundials. These corridors lead to walls that enclose a vast forecourt, which ends at the north side with the Stable Gate and at the south side with the Kirk Gate. The garden on the east side is equally extensive and features loggias, a fountain, and statues, with a Fish Gate in the east wall.
