Description
The building is a former waterworks engine house and tank located on Tay Street in Perth, designed by Adam Anderson in 1832. It is an outstanding two-storey Neo-Classical structure featuring a prominent domed rotunda.
The lower part of the rotunda is constructed of ashlar stone and includes Roman Doric pilasters and blind panelled recesses at each bay. The upper part, which was formerly a cistern tank and is painted white, is set back behind a balustrade and features cast-iron plates with blind consoled windows, fluted Ionic pilasters, and an ornamented swagged frieze that incorporates the burgh arms. The rotunda is topped with a ribbed dome and a low cupola with a decorated drum. An inscription above the door in the rotunda reads 'Aquam Igne Et Aqua Haurio'.
To the north, there is a former engine house, which is a single-storey, flat-roofed rectangular-plan wing. This wing features triglyphed Doric pilasters at the corner angles, a panelled parapet, and a tall chimney with Doric columns capped by a Roman urn, which is a fibreglass replica.
