Description

The Forteviot Hotel is an early 19th-century, two-storey lodging house or inn, designed in an L-plan. It features principal elevations facing west and south, with a longer, four-window west elevation and a three-window south elevation that looks towards the Perth/Glasgow railway line. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble with dressed ashlar margins and long and short work ashlar quoins, both of which are painted. It has wide, large regular windows with projecting blocks at the center of the side margins and at the corners, while the lintels of the ground floor windows have raised blocks over their centers. The windows are fitted with 12-pane sash and case glazing, including a dummy window at the center right of the four-bay west elevation. The roof is grey slated, piended over the main block and dropping down at the rear as a half-jerkin. There is a side entrance on the east elevation, though the door is not original. Wallhead stacks are located to the right over the south wall, slightly off-center to the east.

Inside, the hotel retains original cornicework, panelled doors, and a staircase. At the rear, in the northeast re-entrant angle, there is a single-storey half lean-to, half piend-roofed outhouse, which has a small modern addition attached. There is also a single-storey and loft range of outbuildings to the north and northwest, linked by a wall that provides an entrance to the garden. This block is oriented north-south, has a slated piend roof with a central ridge stack, and features garage openings at the ground level to the south, with loft openings above. A tripartite window in the south gable is blocked with rubble. The east-west oriented block, which is domestic, has three bays with a central door and flanking windows at the ground level to the south, and two dormer windows breaking the eaves above. Additionally, there are remains of a partially demolished building attached to the west. The property was noted to be in poor condition as of 1993.
