Description

The Formal Garden at Drummond Castle is a large walled enclosure designed by Kennedy in 1832, built on the site of an older garden with additions made in 1956. The garden is laid out in a formal style, featuring terraces and a grand staircase that leads down from the mansion and keep. It contains approximately 50 pieces of sculpture dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

One notable feature is the sundial, which is a square pillar with an octagonal center and a spired top, featuring 76 hollow and facet dials. This sundial is dated 1630 and was created by John Mylne III, a master mason.

Another significant element is the Grimsthorpe facade, a classical garden ornament or "gloriette" that has a central arch and a large basin, flanked by Roman Doric columns and niches that hold statues. This feature dates from the 18th century and was relocated from Grimsthorpe in 1932.

The garden also includes Baroque single arch pavilions made of channeled ashlar, which have marble busts at the wallhead. The date of these pavilions is uncertain, but they are thought to be from around 1832.

Additionally, there is a bridge with four arches, constructed of rubble and featuring battlemented parapets, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century.
