Description

This is a mid to late 19th century cottage and outbuildings located at Langskaill Farm in Westray, along with an early 20th century threshing barn and byres. The cottage and two outbuildings are arranged in a row along the roadside, while L-plan farm buildings are situated at the rear, including a threshing barn from around 1910 and flanking byres. The buildings feature flagstone walls with remnants of harling in some areas, and the farm building has alternate canted corner stones as quoins.

The cottage has three bays, with a central door and flanking windows on the south elevation. There is a single window on the west gable, two windows at the rear, and a plain elevation on the east side. The windows are 4-pane timber sash and case, though the door has been replaced. The roof is pitched and covered with stone slates, featuring crowstepped gables, corniced gable end stacks, and circular cans, along with rooflights.

The central outbuilding has two doors on the south elevation, a window on the far left, and a lean-to on the right, with a door in the left return. It has a pitched roof made of large flagstones, with small glazing panes set within the roof flags.

The outbuilding to the east has a central door on the south elevation, flanked by windows. It features a pitched outshot to the left, a central window, and a door in the right return, along with a window on the east gable wall and a rear outshot. The cottage has a pitched, underseamed flagstone roof with small glazing panes in the roof flags, while the front outshot has an overseamed flagstone roof.

The L-plan steading includes a central two-storey threshing barn with an off-centre door to the left and ground floor windows on both sides. There is a first-floor loft opening to the right. To the right of the barn is a single-storey building with a central door and flanking windows, and a door in the east gable wall. To the left of the barn is another single-storey building with a central floor and flanking windows, along with an advanced wing to the right that has windows and doors in the right return. The rear of the threshing barn features an off-centre threshing door to the right, with a first-floor loft opening above it, a ground floor window to the left, and a loft door above. The roofs are pitched and covered with Caithness slate, and there are rooflights.

The interior of the threshing barn was last seen in 2000 and contains remains of a threshing machine.
