Description

This is an early to mid-19th century farmstead, located at South Hamar, Westray. The farmstead comprises a row of two dwellings, a threshing barn with a circular corn-drying kiln, other farm buildings, and a smaller, parallel range containing a byre and barn, separated by a narrow, paved open passage. The buildings are constructed of exposed coursed rubble with flagstone details.

The principal, south elevation features a central three-bay house with a central door and flanking windows. To the east of this house is a smaller, three-bay house, with a central door, flanking windows, and a blocked window to the right, now obscured by a lean-to porch. A barn is attached to the west of the house, with an off-centre door and a stone pier to the right of the door. A kiln is attached to the northwest of the barn; a henhouse and stable/byre sit to the south of the barn, partially obscuring the kiln. Access to the henhouse is to the left of the barn door. The stable has a plain gable, and a small lean-to outhouse sits set back to the left, with access in the south wall. The byre runs parallel to the main house, with a plain elevation. A pig house addition extends south from the byre on its left side, with two openings in the wall and an entrance door in the return. A second, smaller pig house extends from the byre's west gable, with access in the south wall. The remains of a lean-to smithy are located to the south of the east house, with openings in its east and west gables.

The east elevation has a window in the gable of the east house, and access to the stable is in this elevation, to the left. An upper, boarded stable door remains. The north elevation features a central window in the central house; the barn is set back to the right of the house with a winnowing door. The west elevation shows the circular kiln attached to the barn, offset to the left.

Underseamed flagstone roofs are visible on the first house, the threshing barn, and the pig houses. Rooflights are present in the roof flags of the central house, both front and rear. Rough stone skews form crude crowsteps on the east gable. The stable/byre has an overseamed flagstone roof with triangular stones. Flagstones remain on the kiln roof. A flagstone roof remains on the lean-to smithy. Corniced gable stacks are present on the central house, and an east corniced gable stack on the east house.

Inside the central house, the floors are flagged, and the walls are plastered. A box bed is located in the west room, and the roof is constructed with couple beams. The east house has a fireplace with a chimney breast, including a single stone slab lintel, a timber fireplace surround, and mantelshelf. A single stone slab lintel is also present over the east fireplace, along with a fire crane with hooks and a metal grate. A recess is located to the right of the fireplace. The kiln door is raised approximately one metre above the barn floor level with a rectangular flue to the bottom right, and the internal kiln ledge is intact. The threshing barn has a couple roof structure.
