Description

Old Manse in Langskaill, Westray, is a late 18th-century, two-storey and attic building that was originally a manse. It features a rectangular plan and has later additions, including front and rear wings from the mid-19th century. The exterior is harled with flagstone.

On the south elevation, there are single windows on both the ground and first floors in the left bay and the far right bay. The central section is an advanced, two-storey bay with a piended roof, containing a window on both floors. To the left gable of the original house, there is a lean-to with a door to the right and a window to the left.

The west elevation includes an attic window on the right and a plain wall for the lean-to. The later wing, set back to the right, has single windows on both floors, while a two-storey wing to the left has a central ground floor window and another window on the far right.

On the north elevation, there is a central ground floor window and a smaller window above it on the first floor. A lean-to is located to the far right, with a plain wall. To the left, there is an advanced pitched wing with a plain gable and a lean-to attached, featuring a ground floor window.

The east elevation has a ground floor window on the right, two first floor windows, and an attic window on the left. The rear wing lean-to on the right includes two doors and a window to the left. The front wing, set back to the left, has a door to the right, possibly a bolt recess to the left, and a first floor window above.

The building predominantly features large 12-pane timber sash and case windows in the front wing and narrow 18-pane timber sash and case windows. The original house has smaller 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Rooflights are present on the lean-to extensions and the house itself. The original house has a pitched roof with crowstepped gables and corniced gable end stacks with tall clay cans. The front extensions have piended roofs and a corniced wall head stack to the east, along with a tall clay can. The north wing has a corniced gable end stack and a tall clay can. The roof is covered with Caithness slate.

The interior was not seen in 2000.

A walled garden is located to the southeast of the Manse, enclosed by tall rubble walls that surround two rectangular-plan gardens.
