Description
Gorn, located in Graemsay, is a mid-19th century traditional Orkney farm with later alterations and additions. It is a single-storey, three-bay, long-rectangular-plan structure that includes a single-bay dwelling house connected to a lower single-bay store and a lower two-bay byre, all built on sloping ground that descends to the south. There is also a single-bay rectangular-plan store or barn positioned at right angles to the main group, featuring a flat-roofed addition to the south, creating a T-plan layout. Additionally, there is a single-storey rectangular-plan store or barn with a lean-to addition located to the southwest of the main complex. The building is constructed of roughly coursed rubble.
On the east (principal) elevation of the dwelling house, there is a deep-set boarded door to the right in the store bay at the center, and another deep-set boarded door to the left in the dwelling house bay to the right. The byre block to the left has a deep-set boarded door in each bay. The west (rear) elevation features two evenly spaced windows in the central bays, with two more widely spaced windows in the bays to the left and a blank bay to the right. The north (side) elevation has a window set to the left with a gablehead stack above it, while the south (side) elevation is blank.
The windows are fixed and consist of four-pane timber sash and case designs. The roofs are made of flagstone, with a cement mortar ridge, grey slate on the central store, coped skews, and rubble corniced gablehead and ridge stacks.
Inside, the property features timber skirting boards and architraves, timber panelled doors, and an ornate fire surround supported by half-fluted Corinthian columns. The byre includes flagstone stall divisions and a central slurry channel.
The store or barn has a north elevation with a centered deep-set boarded door flanked by a small window. The south elevation features a blank wall due to the lean-to addition. The east elevation has a sliding boarded door set to the left of the gabled wall, while the west elevation has a blank gabled wall to the left and two evenly spaced boarded doors in the lean-to addition to the right. This store or barn also has a flagstone roof.
The store or barn to the southwest has a north (gabled) elevation with a centered boarded door, and its south (gabled) elevation features a boarded sliding door to the left and a large boarded sliding door for the addition to the right. The east and west side elevations are blank, and this structure has a corrugated-iron roof.
